PEDRO MARÍA DELGADO,

An entrepreneur with an eye for business.

Pedro María Delgado, was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He completed his undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Arts and in 1903, together with his father Domingo and his brother Antonio, founded the Domingo Delgado trading firm in Caracas. Five years later, the company was renamed Pedro María Delgado y Compañía and after his younger brother joined the company in 1913, the name was shortened to Delgado y Cía., S.A. as it is known to this day. He was a much-respected businessman, enjoying a prestigious reputation in Caracas society. He was a director and in 1933 President of Banco Mercantil y Agrícola (currently Banco Mercantil). He was a board member of Compañía de Seguros La Previsora and founder and shareholder of several iconic enterprises such as: Banco Venezolano de Credito, Jabon Las Llaves, C.A. Cinematográfica Venezolana, the Ávila Studios, headed at the time by Rómulo Gallegos, the famous Venezuelan novelist and politician, 35th President of Venezuela. Pedro María was also founder and member of the board of the Caracas Chamber of Commerce. A farmer of the first order, he and his brother Domingo acquired several sugar cane farms in the areas that are now known as: El Marques, La California, Los Ruices and Petare, part of the greater Caracas. He founded El Ávila sugar mill and was greatly admired for the fair treatment of his workers and his social awareness. He was married to Belén María Chapellín Liendo with whom he had four children - José Antonio, Luis Henrique, Carlos Eduardo and Belén María. He died prematurely in 1940, leaving his wife and children in charge of the family enterprises that included Delgado y Cía., S.A. and an extraordinary legacy of family principles and values which stand strong to this day in the Delgado family after more than 100 years of commercial activities in Venezuela.
